Care For African American Hair The Natural Way

Black hair needs lots of love and attention. We are all used to going into the local hair shop and buying the latest hair creme to put into our hair, but how often do we stop to think about what is in these products?

It is no secret that african american hair can be fragile, and we are so caught up in the idea of having "good hair" which normally means having straight hair. Store bought products may work for a while but eventually just end up coating the hair and leaving it listless. The list of ingredients may start with something natural like olive oil, but read on further and it will inevitably end with something that you can barely pronounce.

We spend major money buying these chemical based concoctions and apply them to our hair mostly with unsatisfactory results. The ends of our hair stay dry and unmanageable and we are forced to chase the next bottle, hoping that we will hit natural hair gold with the next purchase. What if the answers to black hair care could be found right in your kitchen pantry

Olive Oil

Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been around since ancient times, and this wonderful little oil can be used for so much more than just drizzling on your salad. Chock full of replenishing antioxidants, our natural hair absorbs the oil easily, leaving our hair soft and pliable with no greasy buildup.

It can be used directly on your natural hair and scalp, or add one part water with to one part olive oil and add an essential oil for a heavenly scent, to form a daily spritz.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil can be a solid or a liquid depending on the temperature, so it can either be applied directly to your natural hair and scalp as hair butter, or liquified and blended with other oils like olive to pack a double whammy as an instant hair softener. This light and virtually odourless oil is a must have for anyone sporting a kinky mane.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is a great astringent for the scalp and clarifies the natural hair shaft. Mix 1 part ACV and 1 part water to spray onto the hair. Leave in for five minutes and shampoo out. Your hair will feel softer and your scalp will be tingly fresh.

Baking Soda

Baking Soda is so often the overlooked hero in any household. It can do so much more than just relieve the odours in your refrigerator.

Baking soda is great cleanser for your african american hair especially if you find that you have allergies to the chemicals in conventional shampoo, or add a little to your shampoo for an added cleansing boost. Your scalp will feel extra clean and your hair will feel silky soft.

Black hair responds well to natural things. The products that come out of the hair shop normally contain chemicals that did not come out of natural means. Try something a little different to add lifetime luster to your hair from organic means versus something made in a lab.
